What R-Value Does My Hampton Roads Attic Need?

June 5, 2026

Insulation depth ruler standing in deep blown-in attic insulation to measure R-value in a Hampton Roads home

Ask most Hampton Roads homeowners what R-value their attic has, and you'll get a blank stare. That's a problem — because your attic's R-value is the single biggest factor in how much you spend heating and cooling your home. If you're running the AC hard all summer and wondering why your Dominion bill keeps climbing, low attic insulation R-value is often the culprit.

What Is R-Value?

R-value measures thermal resistance — how well insulation resists heat flow. The higher the number, the better the insulation performs. A higher R-value means less heat entering your home in summer and less heat escaping in winter. It's not a brand or a type of insulation; it's a performance measurement that applies to all materials.

Every inch of blown-in fiberglass has an R-value of roughly 2.2–2.7. Every inch of blown-in cellulose is roughly 3.2–3.8. Batt fiberglass runs around 3.0–3.8 per inch. This means achieving a high R-value requires substantial depth — and many Hampton Roads attics are nowhere close.

What Does the Department of Energy Recommend for Hampton Roads?

Hampton Roads sits inClimate Zone 3— a mixed-humid zone with hot summers and mild-to-cool winters. The Department of Energy recommends the following for attic insulation in Zone 3:

  • Minimum:R-30
  • Recommended:R-38
  • Maximum benefit:R-49 to R-60

Many homes built before 1990 in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and surrounding areas were built to lower insulation standards. Homes from the 1970s may have R-11 or less. An inspection can measure current depth and condition; any utility-cost impact varies with the home, HVAC use, weather, and energy rates.

How to Check Your Current R-Value

You don't need a contractor to get a rough idea. Here's a quick method:

  1. Go into your attic with a ruler or tape measure.
  2. Measure the depth of your current insulation in inches.
  3. Multiply by 2.5 (a rough middle estimate for common insulation types).
  4. That's your approximate R-value.

Six inches of blown fiberglass = roughly R-15. Ten inches = roughly R-25. To hit R-49, you'd need about 18–20 inches of blown fiberglass, or about 13–15 inches of blown cellulose.

Why R-Value Matters More in Hampton Roads Than You Think

Hampton Roads has a deceptive climate. Yes, winters are mild compared to northern Virginia — but summers are brutally humid and hot. Attic temperatures regularly hit 130–150°F in July and August. Without adequate R-value, that heat radiates directly into your conditioned space, forcing your AC to run longer and harder.

Additionally, the high humidity here accelerates degradation of older insulation. Moisture intrusion compresses batts and reduces their effective R-value over time, meaning a 20-year-old R-19 installation is probably performing at R-12 or less by now.

What We Install and Why

Universal Insulation Doctor installs to a minimum ofR-49on every attic job — the Department of Energy's highest recommended level for Zone 3. We also offerPest Guard Insulation™, a borate-treated blown-in fiberglass option described as intended to deter certain insects. Ask for the current product label to confirm details.

If your attic is under R-30, an upgrade may improve comfort and reduce energy use. Actual utility impacts and timing vary with existing insulation, air sealing, HVAC use, weather, and energy rates. Call us at(757) 962-0340to schedule a free attic inspection and R-value assessment.
